Mesa Water District Sponsors Costa Mesa High School in 2019 Solar Cup, the Nation’s Largest Student-Based Solar-Powered Boat Race

COSTA MESA, Calif.; April 11, 2019 — Mesa Water District (Mesa Water®) is pleased to sponsor Costa Mesa High School (CMHS) in Solar Cup 2019, hosted by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

“We are glad to partner once again with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California on this unique educational experience for high school students in our service area,” says Mesa Water® Board President, Shawn Dewane.

Led by science, technology, engineering and math teachers at CMHS, participating students apply engineering, math and physics skills while learning about water conservation and renewable energy. Students work together over seven months to design and build a solar-powered, 16-foot-long racing boat.

Students also produce a one-minute Public Service Announcement video encouraging ongoing water use efficiency in Southern California. CMHS is one of 42 high school teams throughout Southern California participating in the program.

This year’s Solar Cup, themed “It’s a SoCal Thing: Conserve Water Every Day, 365,” culminates with a boat race competition May 17-19, 2019 at Lake Skinner, in Temecula. The free event is open to the public and will include water activities and games.

In addition to its participation in Solar Cup, Mesa Water provides water education through its water education assemblies for fifth-grade classes in Mesa Water’s service area, as well as the annual Children’s Water Education Festival where Mesa Water hosts educational sessions in partnership with Discovery Science Foundation and the Costa Mesa-based nonprofit Operation Clean Slate.
