Mesa Water Renewed for Fifth Time as “District of Distinction” for Good Governance and Fiscal Practices

Special District Leadership Foundation reaccredits District for transparent, ethical practices and policies

Costa Mesa, Calif.; February 3, 2016 – Mesa Water District (Mesa Water) has received reaccreditation as a “District of Distinction” by the statewide Special District Leadership Foundation (SDLF) for its sound fiscal management policies and practices. This is the fifth time since the award’s inception in 2007 that Mesa Water has received this biannual recognition.

“We’re pleased to present this District of Distinction accreditation to Mesa Water,” said SDLF Public Affairs Field Coordinator Chris Palmer, “as it means your district has an understanding and respects the responsibilities inherent in providing essential public services, has clean audits, operates in a fiscally responsible and transparent manner, places an emphasis on continuing education, and focuses on having sound policies in the areas of governance, board conduct, district finances, transparency, and reserves.”

To receive this recognition, specific transparency requirements must be met and the District’s three previous years of operations are independently audited by SDLF volunteers.  The District website must provide such items as election procedures and deadlines, board meeting schedule and agendas, current district budget, most recent financial audit, and compensation for board and staff, or a link to the State Controller’s web page with such data.

“The District of Distinction is an honor for Mesa Water as it recognizes our Board and staff dedication to ethical and sound business practices, transparent finances, and commitment to open government,” said Mesa Water Board President Shawn Dewane.
