Thefts of Water Backflow Devices are on the Rise in Mesa Water's Service Area

Costa Mesa, Calif.; August 19, 2011 – The Mesa Water District (Mesa Water) Board of Directors alerts Mesa Water’s customers and community that thieves are targeting water backflow devices.  These devices are necessary for maintaining water quality, and they are expensive to replace or repair.  Mesa Water is collaborating with local police departments on this issue to protect and prevent thefts of water backflow devices, and to serve as a resource for citizens who need to repair or replace stolen backflow devices..

“Mesa Water is working with law enforcement to prevent thefts of our customers’ water infrastructure equipment, and we encourage the public to report thefts to their local police department,” said the District’s Board President, Fred R. Bockmiller, Jr., P.E.

Protect Water Backflow Devices

Mesa Water recommends that its customers take action to protect backflow devices using one or more of these suggested methods to deter theft:

  • Encase the device in a commercially available enclosure;
  • Increase lighting and trim landscaping around the device; and,
  • Use video surveillance and/or security to monitor the device.

Report Thefts of Water Backflow Devices
