Remembering Hank Panian

panianIt is with great sadness that we announce that Henry “Hank” S. Panian - former Mesa Water Director and Orange Coast College History Professor has passed away Saturday. Hank was truly a cornerstone for our Mesa Water family and beloved by the entire City of Costa Mesa. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Hank and his family.

Hank Panian is a former member of Mesa Water’s Board of Directors and local historian. Mr. Panian served on Mesa Water’s Board from 1977 until 1998. He earned his Master of Arts in History at UC Berkeley, and taught California History at Orange Coast College for 34 years.

Mr. Panian received Mesa Water’s Lifetime Water Achievement Award at the District’s 50th Anniversary VIP event for more than two decades of dedicated service to Mesa Water. He guided Mesa Water through a multitude of advancements, including building two reservoirs, Master Plans, and the Colored Water Treatment Facility. He was also designated Professor Emeritus of Mesa Water's Water Issues Study Group, water education program for adults.

Mr. Panian is a long-standing (since 1966) member and volunteer of the Costa Mesa Historical Society, which bestowed upon him the Living Memorial Award.

In 1997, the National Society for Daughters of the American Revolution honored Mr. Panian with an Excellence in Community Service Award for his work in preserving local history; also in 1997, the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce named him Man of the Year, and the Salgo-Noren Foundation named him College Professor of the Year.
