MESA CUSTOMERS ASKED TO CONSERVE WATER
Costa Mesa, Calif. – Mesa Consolidated Water District (Mesa) customers are
being asked to conserve water to support other areas of the region facing water supply
changes from the record dry year for rainfall. Under the tagline, "It's Time to Get Serious,"
the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California last week launched the first round of
radio advertisements as part of the largest public outreach and education effort in the
agency's history to urge consumers and businesses to voluntarily save water.
Mesa’s water supply is a blend of local groundwater and is supplemented at various
times with imported water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
According to General Manager Lee Pearl, Mesa along with other Orange County water
agencies will be increasing their groundwater production to meet customer demands.
The change in water sources can affect its hardness from soft (36 milligrams per
liter (mg/L)) to hard (115 - 209 mglL). Customers that have historically received soft water
may now receive hard water. Hard water is caused from a high mineral content of calcium
and magnesium, which may leave a white film in dishwashers and un-dissolved detergent
in washing machines. There are no adverse health effects from hard water. Mesa’s water
continues to meet and exceed state and federal standards.
Hard water spotting can be reduced by soaking affected glassware in white vinegar,
rinse with water, and towel dry. Many newer dishwashers have adjustable settings for
water hardness. Various dishwasher detergents are available to help reduce hard water
spotting. Please refer to the manufacturers guidelines for your appliances.
