MESA TAKES UNCONVENTIONAL APPROACH TO PROMOTE “SAFE FROM THE TAP”
WITH NEW WATER VENDING MACHINE

Costa Mesa, Calif.– Mesa Consolidated Water District’s (Mesa) Board of Directors has taken a unique and innovative approach to educating the community about the safety of its tap water. Mesa has installed a water vending machine at its District office and will host a “Safe from the Tap” launch event on June 25, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Water will be provided at no cost, and the first 50 customers to arrive will receive a complimentary 3 gallon emergency water supply container. The event will also include some fun surprises for children and a water quality demonstration.

Mesa will not charge customers to get water from the vending machine for the first day. After June 25, 2008, the prices will be $0.05 for one gallon and $0.25 for 5 gallons.

“Mesa’s Board of Directors is focusing on customers that purchase water from vending machines and bottled water because they do not think their tap water is safe to drink. Some may come from areas where water from the tap is not drinkable,” said James F. Atkinson, Board President. “The purpose of the vending machine is to educate consumers and get them to understand that the water that comes through their faucet at home is as high in quality as the water they buy from the machine, and that tap water is far less expensive.” The water Mesa delivers to customer’s taps costs them $.0008 versus just over $1 at most grocery stores.

Mesa is charging so little for the water from the vending machine because it is not intended to provide revenue for the District. Information about the safety and quality of Mesa’s tap water will be displayed on the machine.

More information about Mesa’s water vending machine and the launch event is available by calling (949) 631-1205 or by visiting www.mesawater.org.

Mesa provides water service to more than 100,000 customers in an 18 square-mile area. The service area includes the city of Costa Mesa, parts of Newport Beach, and the John Wayne Airport. Mesa is dedicated to satisfying our community's water needs.
